Nature Journaling

What is Nature Journaling?

Nature Journaling is described by Clare Walker Leslie - naturalist, educator, artist and author -  as "The regular recording of observations, perceptions, and feelings about the world of nature around you."

Nature journaling is a personal way of discovering nature and deepening your connection to the natural world through words, pictures and numbers. It's a way of feeding your curiosity about the world around you, a way to ask questions and find answers, a way for you to make observations and develop skills as an artist, writer or naturalist - or all three!

As a self taught naturalist I have used my sketchbooks and nature journals as a way of getting to know the landscape, as a method for developing my skills and as a way of continuing my ongoing study of nature outdoors. My journals and shared experiences in the outdoors motivate me to inspire others, encourage me to seek solace in nature and feed my curiosity for the natural world.

My path to Nature Journaling.

I grew up on a farm in rural Dorset, and spent most of my holidays in the heart of Exmoor. After achieving a degree, I worked in the arts and heritage sector for many years, connecting people with the arts, and using the arts to creatively connect people with the world around them.

But after a personal tragedy I wanted to do something to bring me back to what I truly loved; art and nature, as both were integral parts of my personal recovery. In 2016 I earned a Masters in Illustration from the Arts University of Bournemouth, specialising in drawing and printmaking. My work focused on drawing in the field, journals and a creation of focused works responding to the landscape in an area of outstanding natural beauty near the Jurassic coast in Dorset.

Since then, I have evolved a career in conservation, combining my love of the outdoors and creativity to help people make connections with nature. I have also continued my drawing journey, working with clients and creating my own work.  More recently I've discovered and developed a love of facilitating.

I am now on a path to learn how to effectively use drawing as a tool to help students, colleagues and friends connect with the surrounding environment and take action for nature. I hope to do this through nature journaling and creative drawing activities.
